Easy to make, flexible, and delicious, homemade taco seasoning is superior to store-bought. Make your beloved Mexican dishes better with it!

This seasoning is one of the reasons I enjoy Mexican cuisine so much. I frequently incorporate it into salads, spaghetti dishes, and dips that are taco-inspired. And since there are numerous recipes that call for it, learning how to create the homemade version is a necessity!

Taco seasoning recipe

An assortment of spices that is dripping with Hispanic flavors makes up homemade taco seasoning. Despite its name, you can use it in many other dishes in addition to tacos. And for three major reasons, this homemade version is far superior to the pre-packaged packets: it is flavorful, reasonably priced, and lower in sodium.
I enjoy spicy cuisine, and this combination has a rich heat that is not just hot. Even though each ingredient is powerful enough on its own, many seasonings complement one another well. When you combine them, a taste explosion results! And compared to the equivalent product from the shop, this recipe yields a mixture that is more flavorful.

Making it at home is also more cost-effective. You can prepare it whenever you want if you keep the individual spices that go into this mixture in your pantry. Driving to the closest food store is not necessary. Depending on how much your recipe asks for, you can quickly make a large quantity of this.
The store-bought varieties of this seasoning have ingredients that you don’t typically see. Making your own version at home will help you avoid the strange compounds present in processed foods.

  • 4 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 2 teaspoons cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper.


  • Combine all the spices in a small bowl and stir until evenly mixed.
  • Use immediately, or store in an air-tight container, away from heat and sunlight, and use as needed.
